10 Chemicals Your Kids Should Avoid at Home
July 23, 2015 All of us feel the proudest when we become parents and just a look
at the small baby makes our heart melt. We do everything possible in our
capacity to make them feel comfortable and to keep them disease free.
However, there are certain dangerous chemicals that are infused in some
products and can have a dangerous bearing on the child as the child’s
skin and immune system is weak initially. These chemicals might not be
visible to the naked eyes of parents but the parents should make sure
that any of the products having these harmful chemicals should be kept
at an arm’s breadth when it comes to their child’s reach. Let us have a
closer look at some of these chemicals.
Parabens- Parabens is one of those chemicals that
could prove harmful to your child. This chemical is found in the form of
a preservative in many cosmetic creams like sunscreen. The newly
developed immune system of your child can have a world of problems in
reacting to this chemical.
Formaldehyde- This chemical can be
extremely hazardous to your young ones. Formaldehyde is a flammable
compound that is found in building materials and in different kinds of
wood. If you are a smoker, then you should be all the more careful as
this chemical is present in cigarette smoke too. To keep this chemical
out of your children’s reach, you should make sure that while using food
for the renovation of your house, one should use exterior grade wood
with a minimal formaldehyde content. This chemical can nauseate your
child and can sometimes lead to breathlessness.
Lead- One of the
most precarious chemical that can cause damages to your child’s immune
system forever. Many children have lost their reproductive powers and
many have shot up their blood pressure unknowingly when they have come
in contact with this chemical. The most common way of a chance encounter
with this chemical is through the paints. Many of us like to paint our
houses regularly and it is in these paints that a hazardous amount of
lead is present. As a parent, one should buy those paints, which have a
low level of lead and should keep children at some other place while the
paintwork is going on.
Fertilizers- Almost all of us have a
terrace garden of some sorts and sometimes in order to impress our
neighbour, we tend to use many fertilizers in order to make the growth
of the plants quick. However, one should keep in mind that children have
the tendency to go and have a sniff at those plants. These fertilizers
can have an adverse effect on your child’s health and can make him/her
very sick.
PFC- PFCs are also dangerous chemicals that can play a
central role in making children go sick. These chemicals are present in
fast food wrappers and in many of the foils that we use for packing
too.
PBB- PBBs are strong chemicals that are found in the foam
of car seats and in some electronics items. It is important that parents
use a nice set of seat covers for their cars in order to make them
non-harmful for children.
Phthalates- These chemicals are found in detergent powders in the form
of fragrances. Hence, one should be careful enough while buying these
detergents.
Bisphenol A- This chemical is present in the soft
drink cans and in microwave containers too. One should be careful while
buying such products.
Radon- This colourless and odourless gas
is one of the most dangerous gases and can even lead to a child’s death
if exposed to it.
Chlorine- Chlorine is used as a decontaminator
in the water provided by the civic bodies. Chlorine also has the
ability to make your child very sick and can even be a cause off rectal
cancer.
Hence, these chemicals should be kept away from the reach of children in order to provide them a safe childhood.
